Scholarship Announcement

Dr. Kates has created a $1,000 scholarship award for current high school seniors in the greater Cleveland area. The applicants do not have to be patients of Dr. Kates.

Dr. Kates is an orthodontic specialist who has been practicing in the Cleveland area for over 14 years. He, his associates and staff have treated thousands of adults and children with braces, creating more confident individuals with captivating smiles and a healthier bite.

Dr. Kates has a very strong belief in community and the role professionals should play to strengthen and enhance our community. Dr. Kates also realizes that further education is the great equalizer for our youth to fully succeed and reach their full potential.

Dr. Kates explains, "We see so many young adults and have created friendships throughout the course of their two-year treatment. Young adults also have a tendency to open up to us during treatment. They discuss hurdles and obstacles that many are challenged with on a daily basis, from peer pressure, to teenage drinking, to bullying and even early pregnancies. Unfortunately, our youth live in a very trying time. Therefore, in order to create a more positive dialogue, we started this scholarship contest. We ask current seniors in high school to write a three-page essay describing some of the recent problems within their community and create ideas on how to solve them."

"The winning student receives a $1,000 scholarship toward the school of their choice. In return, we get ideas on how to have a healthier dialogue with our patients and possibly steer them in the right direction when the time comes for them to make life-changing decisions. We are not trying to raise children or substitute as parents. We simply want to give our community the best chance it has to succeed."

A Letter From Our 2009 Scholarship Winner

I became a patient at Dr. Kates' Orthodontic office in 2005 as an 8th grader at Heritage Middle School. Now, as a high school graduate, the love and admiration I have for Dr. Kates and his assistants is immeasurable. Not only have they helped me to smile for the first time in over ten years, Dr. Kates and his assistants have also provided me with another stepping stone towards my higher education. It takes a big heart to have the willingness to give during such trying times. It is evident, however, that the loving individuals at Kates Orthodontics have done just that. Just as they have provided this much-needed help for me, I hope to do the same for someone else in the future. Thank you all!

Always,

A Letter From Our 2008 Scholarship Winner

Dr. Kates,

I would like to thank you for the opportunity you have provided students in the Cleveland area by offering the Kates orthodontics scholarship. Not only is the monetary award important for struggling families who need the extra money to help pay increasing tuition costs, but the entire concept behind the scholarship has a substantial influence on all the families throughout our neighborhood. One of the biggest threats to our community right now community right now involves teenagers - those who lack the physical and emotional support to know better, and those who commit crimes out of the pure hatred. While many choose to ignore these prevalent problems, you have chosen to approach the issue, listen to those willing to provide insight, and take action to prevent these destructive behaviors from happening. When families become hopeless, and when those committing these crimes lose faith in themselves, it is people like you who make a significant impact on their lives. For this, from both a resident in this community and as the 2008 recipient of this scholarship, I thank you.

Even though I will be attending school in Athens at Ohio University this fall, Cleveland will always be my home. As I spend the majority of my time away at college, coming home will be even more significant than it has been in the past, which is why I feel it is important for everyone to get involved - do your part to continue making Cleveland the culturally rich city it has always been, full of opportunity and hope.

Thank you,

Kim Hackman
